In 1993, Leslee and I were volunteers at the American Association of Woodturners Symposium at the SUNY campus in Purchase, New York. Our husbands were woodturners and we were woodturning groupies. While our husbands attended demonstrations and helped with the equipment and demonstrations, we were signed up to help with hospitality--making coffee, setting out donuts, that sort of thing. Somehow our skill with 3 gallon coffee urns landed us a cash box and rolls of tickets to be exchanged for meals in the cafeteria by attendees. Then, we were asked to help sort out a problem with the banquet tickets. Following Leslee's lead, I learned how to account and manage the record keeping for the daily receipts. I'd no idea at the time that she was an old hand when it came to running the business end of an event like this.
